Nearly nine months after the 38-year-old Elite Café shuttered on Fillmore Street, a new tenant is looking to move into the vacant spot.

Restaurateur Adriano Paganini, who founded restaurant group Back of the House, Inc., will take over the space at 2049 Fillmore St., according to a report by SFist.

It’s unclear at this time what Paganini’s newest restaurant will be named, though SFist reports it will serve Italian fare. Back of the House is the restaurant group behind a Mano, barvale, Beretta, Delarosa, El Techo, plus newcomer and vegan concept restaurant Wildseed.

In April, Elite Cafe owner Andrew Chun told the Chronicle the longstanding business would close because of San Francisco’s high operating costs. Chun, who took over Elite Cafe in 2016, initially planned to operate the New Orleans-themed restaurant until 2 a.m. to attract the late-night crowd, though that plan was never fruitful.

“We really thought we could bring in a drinking crowd,” Chun told the Chronicle. “But with the neighborhood the way it is, last call was happening like at 10 p.m.”

Elements of the former restaurant are also expected to change as the new business moves in. According to by The New Fillmore, renovation of the structure began last month and the dark paint featured on the outside of the building could be restored back to the original Art Deco façade.

We reached out to Back of the House for comment but did not hear back by the time of publication. We’ll update the story if we hear back.
